FAQS
- A pressure reducing valve (PRV), also called a pressure regulator, is a self-actuated valve that automatically reduces a higher upstream (inlet) pressure to a lower, constant downstream (outlet) pressure regardless of changes in upstream pressure or downstream flow demand. Inside the valve, a spring-loaded diaphragm or piston senses the downstream pressure and compares it to the spring force (which represents the desired setpoint). If downstream pressure drops below the setpoint (due to increased flow demand), the spring pushes the diaphragm down, opening the valve further to increase flow and raise the downstream pressure back to the setpoint. If downstream pressure rises above the setpoint (due to decreased demand), the diaphragm pushes up against the spring, closing the valve partially to reduce flow. This continuous self-regulation maintains a stable downstream pressure without requiring any external power source or control system — the valve is entirely self-contained and self-actuating. Pressure reducing valves are used wherever a system requires a lower, regulated pressure supplied from a higher-pressure source.
- Pressure reducing valves are used in virtually every industry and building where fluid is distributed from a high-pressure source to lower-pressure end-use equipment. Steam systems use pressure reducing stations to step down boiler pressure (which may be 100-300 PSI or higher) to the lower pressures needed by individual heat exchangers, sterilizers, humidifiers, and other steam-consuming equipment throughout the facility. Compressed air systems use pressure reducers to step down the main header pressure to the specific lower pressures needed by individual machines, tools, and instruments. Water distribution systems use pressure reducing valves to reduce street main pressure (which can exceed 100 PSI in some areas) to the 40-80 PSI range safe for building plumbing fixtures and appliances. Natural gas systems use them to reduce transmission pipeline pressure to distribution pressure and then to the low pressures used by burners, boilers, and appliances. Industrial process systems use them to provide precise, stable pressure to instruments, control valves, and process equipment. Chemical and gas cylinder systems use them to reduce high cylinder pressure to safe working pressures.
- Although both involve pressure control, these are fundamentally different devices serving opposite functions. A pressure reducing valve controls the outlet (downstream) pressure by automatically throttling the flow to maintain a constant lower pressure downstream — it is a normal operating device that continuously modulates during everyday operation to deliver a regulated pressure to downstream equipment. It is installed in the main flow path and regulates the pressure that the downstream system operates at. A pressure relief valve protects against overpressure by opening to vent excess pressure when the system pressure exceeds a safe limit — it is a safety device that should rarely, if ever, operate during normal conditions. It is installed as a branch off the main piping and opens only when something has gone wrong (a control failure, blocked outlet, fire exposure, or other abnormal event). Many systems use both: a pressure reducing valve for normal pressure regulation and a pressure relief valve downstream of it as a safety backup in case the reducing valve fails open and passes full upstream pressure to the downstream system.
- Sizing a pressure reducing valve requires knowing the inlet pressure (the supply pressure upstream of the valve), the desired outlet pressure (the regulated pressure you need downstream), the maximum flow rate (the peak demand that the downstream system will require), and the fluid type (water, steam, air, gas) with its temperature. Using these parameters, the required valve Cv (flow coefficient) is calculated using standardized sizing equations that account for the pressure drop across the valve and the fluid properties. The valve selected must have sufficient Cv to pass the required maximum flow rate while maintaining the desired outlet pressure. The valve should not be oversized — an oversized pressure reducing valve operates near its closed position most of the time, which causes poor regulation accuracy, hunting (oscillating between open and closed), and accelerated wear. The general rule is to size the valve so it operates between 30% and 70% open at normal flow conditions. Also verify that the valve's maximum inlet pressure rating exceeds your supply pressure, and that its materials and temperature rating match the service conditions.
- Pressure reducing valves require periodic maintenance to ensure accurate regulation and reliable operation. Check the outlet pressure regularly with an accurate gauge to verify the valve is maintaining the correct setpoint — a drifting or unstable outlet pressure indicates worn or damaged internal components. Listen for excessive noise, vibration, or chattering, which can indicate that the valve is oversized, the spring is worn, or there is debris on the seat. Inspect the valve for external leaks at the body joints, bonnet, and adjustment stem. Internally, the seat and disc surfaces wear over time due to the constant throttling action, causing leakage and poor regulation — rebuild the valve with a repair kit when regulation deteriorates. The spring can lose its tension over time, causing the regulated pressure to drift downward. Strainers installed upstream of the valve (highly recommended) should be cleaned regularly to prevent debris from reaching and damaging the valve internals. For steam service, ensure that condensate is properly drained upstream and downstream of the valve to prevent water hammer and erosion damage.
