Question 1

What are valve repair kits and what do they typically include?

Accepted Answer

Valve repair kits are pre-packaged sets of replacement parts specifically assembled for a particular valve model, containing all the wear components needed to rebuild or refurbish the valve to like-new condition. A typical valve repair kit includes seals, gaskets, O-rings, seats, packing, springs, and other soft goods (elastomeric and polymer components) that wear out or degrade over time due to the effects of pressure cycling, temperature, chemical exposure, and friction. For example, repair kits for Worcester ball valves available through Centro include PTFE stem packing, PTFE thrust washers, PTFE seals, FKM O-rings, and RTFE (reinforced PTFE) seats — all the parts needed to re-seal the valve and restore tight shutoff. Repair kits for Dwyer diaphragm valves include replacement diaphragms and seal components. Having the correct repair kit on hand allows maintenance to rebuild a valve during a scheduled outage rather than purchasing and waiting for a complete replacement valve, saving both cost and downtime.

Question 2

When should I repair a valve instead of replacing it?

Accepted Answer

Repairing a valve with a rebuild kit is generally the right choice when the valve body, bonnet, and other metallic structural components are still in good condition and only the soft sealing components (seats, seals, packing, O-rings, gaskets) have worn out. This is the most common maintenance scenario for valves in normal service — the metal body lasts for decades, but the polymer and elastomer seals wear over time and need periodic replacement. Repair is usually more cost-effective than replacement for larger, more expensive valves where the body and trim represent the majority of the valve cost. Replacement is the better option when the valve body shows significant corrosion, erosion, cracking, or other structural damage that compromises its pressure-containing integrity; when the valve design is obsolete and spare parts are no longer available; when the valve has been repaired multiple times and the internal surfaces are too worn to hold new seals properly; or when the process requirements have changed and a different valve type or size is now needed.

Question 3

What replacement pilot valve assemblies are available?

Accepted Answer

Replacement pilot valve assemblies are complete, pre-assembled pilot valve units that can be swapped into an existing valve to restore proper operation when the original pilot section has failed. Rather than replacing the entire valve, you replace only the pilot mechanism — the solenoid, armature, pilot orifice, and associated seals — which is the section most likely to fail or degrade over time. Centro carries replacement pilot valve assemblies for several product lines, including the Dwyer SVT Series (replacement pilot valve assemblies that restore the solenoid operation of these temperature control valves). Pilot section failures are typically caused by coil burnout (from overheating, voltage spikes, or moisture ingress), pilot orifice clogging (from dirty or contaminated air supply), and armature or plunger wear (from millions of operating cycles). Having a replacement pilot assembly on hand allows quick field repair without removing the main valve body from the piping — the pilot section is typically bolted or threaded onto the main valve body and can be swapped in minutes.

Question 4

How do I identify the correct repair kit for my valve?

Accepted Answer

Identifying the correct repair kit requires knowing the valve's manufacturer, model number, and size. The manufacturer's part number (MPN) for the valve is the most reliable way to cross-reference to the correct repair kit — each valve model has a specific kit designed to fit its internal dimensions, seal groove sizes, and component specifications. The valve size (pipe connection size) is also critical because even within the same model family, different sizes use different diameter seals, seats, and packing. The valve's material of construction (body material and trim material) may affect which kit is correct, as some models offer different seal materials optimized for different services. If the valve nameplate or MPN is not readable, measure the valve's connection size, identify the manufacturer from the body markings or casting patterns, and consult with Centro's product specialists who can help cross-reference from the available information. Always verify that the kit contents match the components in the valve before beginning the repair — compare each part from the kit to the corresponding worn part removed from the valve.

Question 5

What spare parts should I keep on hand for valve maintenance?

Accepted Answer

A smart spare parts strategy minimizes unplanned downtime while controlling inventory costs. Keep repair kits on hand for your most critical valves — those where a failure would shut down a production line, create a safety hazard, or cause environmental non-compliance. Prioritize repair kits for valves in severe service (high temperatures, corrosive chemicals, abrasive media, high cycling rates) because their soft goods wear out faster. Stock replacement solenoid coils for your pilot valves and solenoid valves, as coil failure is one of the most common electrical valve failures. Stock replacement diaphragms for diaphragm valves and pulse valves, as these are the primary wear components. Keep replacement actuator seal kits for your pneumatic actuators. For commonly used valve sizes and types, consider keeping a complete spare valve that can be installed immediately as a swap-out, with the failed valve then repaired on the bench and returned to spare stock. Work with Centro's product specialists to identify your critical valves and build a recommended spare parts list based on your specific installed base and operating conditions.
