- An air bellow (also called a pneumatic bellow or air spring actuator) is a flexible, sealed rubber or elastomer chamber that expands when filled with compressed air to produce linear force and motion. Unlike a traditional piston-and-cylinder design, an air bellow uses the expansion of a flexible membrane to push against a load. When air is supplied, the bellow inflates and extends, generating force. When exhausted, it deflates and retracts. Air bellows produce large force over a relatively short stroke with no sliding seals, rods, or bearings — meaning no friction, no stick-slip, no seal wear, and no lubrication needed. This makes them ideal for smooth, consistent force applications without maintenance associated with conventional cylinder seals.
- Air bellows are used where their unique characteristics provide advantages: large force in a compact package, zero seal friction, long maintenance-free life, and tolerance of misalignment. Vibration isolation and suspension systems use them as air springs to cushion heavy equipment and machinery. Pressing and clamping use them for smooth, even force distribution over a large area. Lifting and leveling use them to raise platforms and tables by controlling air pressure. Die cushions and press counterbalances use them for controlled resistance during forming. Conveyor and web tensioning use them to maintain constant tension. Packaging equipment uses them for gentle product handling where cushioning prevents damage to delicate items.
- Air bellows use a flexible elastomer chamber with no rigid bore, no sliding seals, and no piston rod — providing short strokes (typically 1-6 inches), very large force relative to size, zero seal friction, no maintenance, and tolerance of misalignment. Standard pneumatic cylinders use a rigid metal bore, a piston with sliding seals, and a piston rod — providing long strokes, precise rod-guided motion, and the ability to push and pull. Standard cylinders are better for long strokes, guided linear motion, high-speed cycling, and push/pull applications. Air bellows are better for high-force short-stroke applications, vibration isolation, force distribution, and maintenance-free operation.
- Air bellows are available in various sizes. Single-convolution bellows have one flexible section providing the shortest stroke (typically under 2 inches) with the most compact collapsed height. Double and triple-convolution bellows stack multiple flexible sections for longer strokes (up to approximately 6 inches or more). Force outputs range from a few hundred pounds for small-diameter bellows to several thousand pounds for large models. The force-deflection relationship is non-linear — as the bellow extends, effective area changes. Manufacturers provide force-deflection curves showing force at each point in the stroke for different air pressures, allowing precise application matching.
- Air bellows require minimal maintenance because they have no sliding seals, bearings, or rod surfaces. Inspect the rubber element visually for cracks, cuts, abrasion, bulging, or deterioration from chemicals, UV, ozone, or heat. Check for leaks by pressurizing and listening or applying soapy water. Verify mounting hardware is secure and the bellow is not contacting sharp edges, hot surfaces, or abrasive materials. Keep the air supply clean and dry. Replace the bellow at the first signs of deterioration before it fails in service — a sudden failure causes immediate loss of force and could allow a suspended load to drop.
