Question 1

What is a round body pneumatic cylinder?

Accepted Answer

A round body pneumatic cylinder (also called a round-line cylinder) has a cylindrical barrel with a circular cross-section, typically constructed from seamless drawn tubing (stainless steel or aluminum) with threaded or crimped end caps. This is in contrast to profile-body or tie-rod cylinders that have square or rectangular cross-sections. Round body cylinders are among the most widely used pneumatic actuators because of their simple, compact, lightweight construction and broad availability in a wide range of bore sizes and stroke lengths. They are available in both repairable and non-repairable designs, single-acting and double-acting, with various mounting options (nose mount, pivot mount, through-hole mount, and band clamp). Round body cylinders are the general-purpose workhorse of pneumatic automation — used in the majority of basic push, pull, lift, clamp, and eject functions across all industries.

Question 2

What are the advantages of round body cylinders?

Accepted Answer

Round body cylinders offer several practical advantages. Compact and lightweight — the cylindrical shape provides the highest strength-to-weight ratio for a given bore size, and the seamless tube construction is lighter than tie-rod or profile body designs. Broad availability — round body cylinders are available in the widest range of standard bore sizes (from 5/16 inch to 3+ inches) and stroke lengths (from fractions of an inch to over 30 inches) in both inch and metric sizes. Low cost — the simple construction (tube body with threaded or crimped caps) makes them among the least expensive pneumatic actuators. Versatile mounting — they can be mounted with nose threads, through-holes, pivot pins, clevis brackets, band clamps, or foot brackets. Easy to install — their light weight and compact shape makes them easy to fit into tight spaces and simple to mount with basic hardware.

Question 3

What is the difference between a repairable and non-repairable round body cylinder?

Accepted Answer

Repairable round body cylinders are designed to be disassembled so internal seals, bearings, and wear components can be replaced. They typically use threaded or retained end caps that can be removed to access the piston and seals. When seals wear out, a seal kit is installed and the cylinder is returned to service. This is economical for larger, more expensive cylinders and high-value installations where the labor cost of replacement outweighs the seal kit cost. Non-repairable round body cylinders are constructed so the body cannot be easily disassembled — the end caps are crimped, staked, or permanently attached. When the cylinder wears out, the entire unit is replaced. They are typically smaller, lighter, and less expensive. Compact Automation non-repairable cylinders available through Centro are offered in bore sizes from 5/16 inch to 3 inches with forces up to 700 pounds at 100 PSI, constructed with stainless steel tubing and aluminum heads.

Question 4

What bore sizes and strokes are available for round body cylinders?

Accepted Answer

Round body cylinders are available in a comprehensive range. Non-repairable round body cylinders available through Centro are offered in bore sizes from 5/16 inch to 3 inches, with forces up to 700 pounds at 100 PSI. They are constructed with stainless steel tubing and aluminum heads and can be configured with single or double rod ends, single-acting, double-acting, or spring-biased operation, various mounting options, and sensors. Repairable round body cylinders (also called NFPA-style or heavy-duty round-line cylinders) are available in larger bore sizes up to 8 inches with proportionally higher force outputs. Strokes range from fractions of an inch to over 30 inches depending on the bore size and model. Custom stroke lengths are often available to match specific application requirements.

Question 5

What applications commonly use round body cylinders?

Accepted Answer

Round body cylinders are general-purpose actuators used across virtually every industry and application type. Material handling uses them for pushing, pulling, lifting, and diverting products on conveyors and transfer systems. Machine automation uses them for clamping, ejecting, pressing, punching, and positioning operations. Packaging uses them for carton forming, product insertion, sealing, and labeling. Assembly uses them for part insertion, riveting, and component feeding. Woodworking, metalworking, textile, plastics, food processing, and pharmaceutical manufacturing all use round body cylinders for basic automation functions. Their popularity comes from the combination of low cost, broad size availability, versatile mounting, proven reliability, and the fact that most basic pneumatic automation tasks — extend, retract, push, pull, clamp — do not require anything more sophisticated than a well-selected round body cylinder.
