- A pneumatic slide (also called a linear slide or slide table) combines a pneumatic cylinder with precision linear guide rails in a single integrated unit for smooth, stable, guided linear motion. The slide has a rigid base body, a moving carriage riding on precision linear bearings, and a pneumatic cylinder driving the carriage. The integrated guide rails provide high rigidity, excellent side-load resistance, non-rotating motion, and smooth travel in a compact, flat-profile package. Pneumatic slides are the most refined form of guided cylinder, optimized for precision and rigidity in pick-and-place, assembly, testing, and dispensing applications.
- Pick-and-place systems use slides to extend and retract grippers or suction cups with high positional accuracy. Assembly stations use slides to advance tooling into the work zone. Testing and inspection stations use slides to extend probes, cameras, or sensors. Dispensing operations use slides to move applicator heads precisely. Machine tending operations use slides to push or pull parts. The precision guide rails maintain tooling alignment with the workpiece, which is critical for quality in assembly, testing, and dispensing applications.
- Table widths range from approximately 20mm to 100mm or more, determining rigidity and mounting area. Stroke lengths range from 10mm to 200mm (approximately 1/2 inch to 8 inches). Force output depends on internal bore size and air pressure. Most are double-acting. Many include adjustable end-of-stroke cushioning and built-in magnet pistons for external position sensors. Mounting is through tapped or through-holes on the base for direct bolting.
- Pneumatic slides use compressed air to drive the carriage between two end positions — fast, powerful, and simple with a directional valve. Ideal for two-position applications with speed controlled by flow control valves. Electric slides use a motor with ball screw or belt drive for continuously programmable positioning — the carriage can stop at any point, change speed during the stroke, and provide force control. Ideal for multi-position applications needing variable speed profiles and position feedback. Pneumatic slides are simpler, lower cost, and faster for basic two-position motion; electric slides provide superior control at higher cost.
- Keep guide rails clean by wiping regularly and using protective covers in dirty environments. Lubricate linear bearings per the manufacturer's schedule. Ensure compressed air is filtered, dried, and regulated to prevent seal damage. Check for smooth carriage travel by manually sliding it with air disconnected — roughness or binding indicates contamination or wear. Verify end-of-stroke cushioning is properly adjusted — hard impacts damage bearings, seals, and the cylinder mechanism. Replace worn seals and bearings before they degrade the precision guide surfaces.
