- A rodless cylinder is a pneumatic actuator that produces linear motion without a protruding piston rod. Instead of a rod extending from the end of the cylinder, the load-carrying carriage rides on the outside of the cylinder body and is connected to the internal piston through a sealed slot or magnetic coupling. When compressed air drives the piston inside the bore, the carriage moves along the outside of the cylinder body, carrying the mounted tooling or workpiece. The two main types are mechanically coupled (the carriage connects to the piston through a sealed slot running the length of the cylinder body, with a sealing band covering the slot) and magnetically coupled (the carriage connects to the piston through magnetic force through the cylinder wall, with no slot or seal to the outside). Rodless cylinders are ideal for long-stroke applications and space-constrained installations because the overall length of the cylinder does not change during operation — unlike a rod cylinder, which requires clearance equal to the stroke length beyond the cylinder body for the extending rod.
- Rodless cylinders offer several advantages for specific applications. Space savings — a rodless cylinder occupies only the space of the cylinder body length regardless of the stroke, while a rod cylinder requires clearance equal to the stroke length beyond the body for the extending rod. This means a rodless cylinder with a 48-inch stroke occupies roughly half the space of a rod cylinder with the same stroke. No rod overhang — long-stroke rod cylinders suffer from rod deflection, bending, and increased seal wear because the unsupported rod acts as a cantilever. Rodless cylinders eliminate this problem entirely. Better side-load handling — the carriage rides on the cylinder body with integral guides, providing inherent resistance to side loads and moments without requiring external guide hardware. Equal force in both directions — because there is no rod reducing the piston area on one side, the force is equal in both extend and retract directions.
- Mechanically coupled rodless cylinders connect the external carriage to the internal piston through a sealed slot running the length of the cylinder body. A continuous sealing band covers the slot, and the carriage pushes through or connects through the slot to the piston. This provides a positive, strong mechanical connection that can handle high forces and high speeds. The sealing band wears over time and may require replacement. Magnetically coupled rodless cylinders connect the carriage to the piston through strong magnets on both sides of the cylinder wall — there is no slot, no seal penetration, and no opening in the cylinder body. This provides a completely sealed cylinder with zero leakage, making it ideal for clean room and food-grade environments. However, the magnetic coupling has a breakaway force limit — if the load force exceeds the magnetic coupling strength, the carriage will decouple from the piston. Mechanically coupled designs are used for higher forces and speeds; magnetically coupled designs are used for cleaner environments and lighter loads.
- Rodless cylinders are used in long-stroke linear motion applications where space is at a premium. Material handling and transfer systems use them to move products, parts, or tooling along long distances on conveyors, transfer bars, and shuttle systems. Packaging equipment uses them for long-travel carton handling, product grouping, and palletizing motions. Automated storage and retrieval systems use them for horizontal and vertical positioning. Gantry and Cartesian robot systems use them as the linear axes for multi-axis pick-and-place systems. Door and gate actuators for large machine enclosures use them for long-travel opening and closing. Printing and converting equipment uses them for web handling and sheet transport over long distances. Any application requiring a stroke longer than approximately 12 to 24 inches should consider rodless cylinders to avoid the rod-deflection and space problems of long-stroke rod cylinders.
- Choose a rodless cylinder when: the stroke is long (generally over 12-24 inches) and space does not allow for the extending rod of a standard cylinder; the application requires equal force in both directions; side loads or moments on the carriage are significant; or the environment requires a fully sealed cylinder (magnetically coupled type). Choose a standard rod cylinder when: the stroke is short to medium and rod overhang is not a concern; the application requires a simple, proven design with the widest selection of sizes, mounting options, and rod end connections; initial cost is a primary consideration (standard cylinders are generally less expensive); or the application requires the highest forces (standard cylinders are available in larger bore sizes). For medium-stroke applications, both types may work — evaluate space constraints, force requirements, and side-load conditions to determine the best fit.
