- A pneumatic flow control valve is a small valve installed in the air lines feeding a pneumatic cylinder or actuator to regulate the rate of airflow and thereby control the speed of the cylinder's stroke. These valves work by restricting the air passage through an adjustable orifice — a needle valve mechanism that can be set from fully open (maximum flow, fastest speed) to nearly closed (minimum flow, slowest speed). Most pneumatic flow control valves are meter-out type, meaning they restrict the air flowing out of the cylinder (the exhaust side) while allowing free flow into the cylinder. This provides smoother, more controllable speed regulation than restricting the inlet air, because the trapped air on the exhaust side acts as a cushion that resists the piston's motion evenly throughout the stroke. Flow control valves are available in threaded port styles for inline installation and push-to-connect styles for tube fitting installation, in sizes from 1/8 inch to 3/8 inch NPT. Centro carries Fabco-Air flow control needle valves including standard and micro-fine precision adjustment models.
- Standard flow control valves use a conventional needle valve with a standard thread pitch on the adjustment stem — each turn of the knob opens or closes the orifice by a relatively large amount, providing adequate speed control for most general automation applications. Micro-fine precision flow control valves use a much finer thread pitch (such as 40 turns per inch / 0.025 inch per turn) on the adjustment stem, so each turn of the knob makes a very small change to the orifice opening. This ultra-fine adjustment allows much more precise and repeatable speed control, which is critical in applications where cylinder speed must be set exactly and remain consistent — such as delicate assembly operations, precise dispensing, controlled insertion, and applications where even small speed variations affect product quality. Fabco-Air's Micro-fine series (NV55 and variants) available through Centro feature this fine-pitch adjustment with a knurled knob and screw lock to prevent the setting from drifting due to vibration. Both standard and micro-fine models are available with NBR (nitrile) or FKM (Viton) seals depending on the media and temperature requirements.
- Meter-in and meter-out refer to where in the pneumatic circuit the flow control valve restricts airflow relative to the cylinder. Meter-out places the flow control valve on the exhaust (outlet) side of the cylinder, restricting the air leaving the cylinder. As the cylinder extends or retracts, the compressed air on the exhaust side can only escape through the restricted orifice, creating back-pressure that controls the piston speed. This is the preferred and most common method because it provides smooth, consistent speed control — the trapped exhaust air acts as a pneumatic cushion that resists and controls the piston's motion evenly throughout the stroke, regardless of changes in load. Meter-in places the flow control valve on the supply (inlet) side, restricting the air entering the cylinder. While this reduces the rate at which the cylinder fills, the exhaust side vents freely, meaning there is no back-pressure cushion — this can result in jerky, inconsistent motion, especially with varying loads. Meter-in is only used in specific situations where the load always acts against the direction of motion (such as a vertically mounted cylinder lifting a weight), where the load itself provides the resistance needed for smooth control.
- Pneumatic flow control valves are installed in the air line between the directional control valve and the pneumatic cylinder, typically on the exhaust port of the cylinder for meter-out control. Threaded-port flow control valves screw directly into the cylinder port or into a fitting connected to the cylinder, with the supply line connected to the other port. The valve has a built-in check valve that allows free flow in one direction (into the cylinder) and controlled (restricted) flow in the other direction (out of the cylinder) — so correct installation orientation matters. To adjust the speed, apply air to the circuit and start with the flow control valve nearly closed (turned clockwise), then slowly open it (turn counterclockwise) while observing the cylinder speed until the desired speed is achieved. For micro-fine models, the screw-lock feature holds the adjustment in place once set. If the cylinder operates in both directions (double-acting), install a flow control valve on each cylinder port to independently control the extend and retract speeds. Always start with the adjustment nearly closed and gradually open — this prevents the cylinder from lunging at full uncontrolled speed during initial setup.
- Pneumatic flow control valves are available with different seal materials to accommodate various media and temperature requirements. NBR (nitrile rubber / Buna-N) is the standard seal material for general compressed air service — it provides good resistance to petroleum-based lubricants, oils, and greases commonly found in compressed air systems, and operates reliably across a temperature range of approximately -20°F to 200°F. NBR seals are the default choice for most standard pneumatic applications. FKM (Viton / fluorine rubber) seals provide superior chemical resistance and a wider temperature range (approximately -15°F to 400°F) — they are specified when the compressed air may contain aggressive compressor oils, when the operating temperature exceeds the range of NBR, or when the valve is used with gases other than air that are incompatible with nitrile. Fabco-Air flow control valves available through Centro are offered in both NBR and FKM seal versions, allowing you to match the seal material to your specific service conditions. When in doubt, FKM provides broader compatibility but at a higher cost.
