- A gate valve is a linear-motion valve that uses a flat or wedge-shaped gate (disc) that slides up and down between the valve seats to open and close the flow path. When the handwheel or actuator is turned, the stem raises the gate out of the flow path, providing a full-bore, unrestricted opening for fluid to pass through with minimal pressure drop. When closed, the gate slides down between the seats to block flow completely. Gate valves are designed primarily for on/off isolation service — they are either fully open or fully closed, and they are not intended for throttling or flow regulation because partially open positions cause high-velocity flow across the gate edge, leading to erosion, vibration, and seat damage. Gate valves are one of the most widely used valve types in industrial piping systems because they provide full-bore flow (the valve opening is the same diameter as the pipe), very low pressure drop when fully open, bidirectional flow capability, and tight shutoff. They are available in a wide range of sizes, materials, and pressure classes.
- Both gate valves and ball valves provide on/off isolation, but they differ in operation, performance, and application suitability. Gate valves use a multi-turn handwheel to raise and lower the gate — opening and closing requires many turns and takes more time. Ball valves use a quarter-turn lever or actuator to rotate the ball — opening and closing is fast and requires only 90 degrees of rotation. This makes ball valves better for applications requiring frequent cycling or quick shutoff, and easier to automate. Ball valves provide more reliable tight shutoff due to the continuous contact between the ball and the PTFE seats. Gate valves can lose their shutoff capability over time as the seats wear from the gate sliding across them. However, gate valves are often preferred for larger pipe sizes (6 inches and above) where ball valves become heavy and expensive, and for applications requiring a full-bore, completely unrestricted flow path for pigging, cleaning, or to avoid pressure drop. Gate valves also handle higher temperatures than PTFE-seated ball valves when fitted with metal seats and graphite packing.
- Gate valves come in several design variations to suit different applications. Wedge gate valves use a wedge-shaped disc that sits between angled seats — the wedging action provides tight sealing and is the most common design for general industrial service. Solid wedge, flexible wedge, and split wedge are sub-types with different characteristics for handling thermal expansion and pipeline stresses. Knife gate valves use a thin, sharp-edged gate that slices through the media — they are designed for slurries, pulp, wastewater, and other media containing solids or fibrous material that would jam a standard wedge gate. Rising stem gate valves have a stem that rises visually when the valve opens, providing a quick visual indication of valve position. Non-rising stem gate valves have a stem that does not rise — they are used where vertical space above the valve is limited. Gate valves are available in body materials including cast iron, ductile iron, carbon steel, stainless steel, bronze, and engineered plastics, with flanged, threaded, and welded end connections across ASME pressure classes from 150 to 2500.
- Gate valves are used across virtually all industrial sectors for full-bore on/off isolation service. Water and wastewater treatment plants use them extensively for main line isolation, pump isolation, filter isolation, and tank isolation — their full-bore design and low pressure drop make them ideal for large water mains and distribution piping. Oil and gas pipelines use gate valves for mainline block valves and station isolation. Power generation plants use them for steam, feedwater, and cooling water isolation. Chemical and petrochemical plants use them for process isolation where full-bore flow and no restriction are needed. Fire protection systems use gate valves (with approved listings) as main water supply isolation valves. HVAC systems use them for chilled water, hot water, and steam line isolation. Marine and shipboard applications use gate valves for seawater, ballast, and process piping. The common thread across all these applications is the need for full-bore, unrestricted isolation with minimal pressure drop when open, in applications where the valve is primarily kept in the fully open or fully closed position and is not cycled frequently.
- Gate valves should not be used for throttling (partial flow control) because their design creates several problems when held in a partially open position. When the gate is partially raised, the high-velocity fluid flowing through the narrow gap between the gate edge and the seat causes severe erosion and vibration that quickly damages the gate and seat surfaces, destroying the valve's ability to provide tight shutoff when fully closed. The gate can also vibrate (chatter) in the flow stream at partial openings, causing noise, fatigue damage to the stem and gate, and process instability. The flow characteristic of a gate valve in the partially open range is very non-linear and unpredictable, making it impossible to achieve stable, repeatable flow control. For throttling and flow regulation, use valve types specifically designed for that purpose — globe valves (the traditional choice for precise throttling), ball valves with V-port or characterized trim, butterfly valves with offset disc designs, or dedicated control valves. Gate valves should be operated either fully open for unrestricted flow or fully closed for complete isolation.
