- A butterfly valve is a quarter turn valve that uses a rotating disc to control or isolate flow in a piping system. The valve opens and closes quickly and is commonly used in large diameter applications.
- Butterfly valves are used in water and wastewater treatment, HVAC systems, chemical processing, food and beverage, fire protection, and general industrial piping systems.
- Common types include wafer style, lug style, and flanged butterfly valves. They are also classified as concentric or high performance (double offset) designs.
- Butterfly valves are commonly made from cast iron, ductile iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel. Seat materials may include EPDM, Buna N, Viton, or PTFE depending on application needs
- Wafer valves fit between flanges and are held in place by flange bolts. Lug valves have threaded inserts that allow one side of the piping to be disconnected while the valve remains installed.
