- A microfluidic valve is a miniature solenoid-operated valve specifically designed to control and manipulate very small volumes of fluids at the microscale level — typically microliters or less. These valves are critical components in microfluidic systems used in laboratory, analytical, medical diagnostic, and life science applications where precise handling of tiny fluid volumes is essential. Typical applications include water quality analyzers, in-vitro diagnostic instruments, DNA sequencing systems, clinical chemistry analyzers, and other analytical devices where reagents, samples, and buffers must be switched, mixed, or directed through micro-channels with extreme precision and zero cross-contamination. Centro carries the ASCO Series 068 and Series 082 microfluidic valves, which are miniature solenoid valves constructed from highly chemically resistant materials like PEEK (polyetheretherketone) with EPDM seals, designed for handling neutral or highly aggressive liquids in analytical and medical systems.
- Microfluidic valves must be constructed from materials that provide both high chemical resistance and biocompatibility, because the fluids they handle are often corrosive reagents, sensitive biological samples, or ultrapure chemicals where any contamination from the valve material would compromise the analysis results. PEEK (polyetheretherketone) is the primary body material used in microfluidic valves like the ASCO Series 068 and 082 available through Centro. PEEK provides excellent chemical resistance to a wide range of acids, bases, organic solvents, and aggressive reagents commonly used in analytical chemistry and life sciences. It is also biocompatible, making it suitable for medical diagnostic and pharmaceutical applications. EPDM seals are standard for general-purpose applications involving aqueous solutions, while other elastomer options may be available for specialized chemical services. The low power consumption and compact design of microfluidic valves also make them suitable for manifold mounting configurations where multiple valves are grouped together to create complex fluid switching and routing networks.
- A microfluidic solenoid valve works on the same electromagnetic principle as a standard industrial solenoid valve, but miniaturized for microscale fluid handling. A small electromagnetic coil surrounds a movable plunger or armature. When electrical current is applied to the coil (typically 24 VDC for microfluidic valves), the resulting magnetic field pulls the plunger, opening or closing the fluid pathway through the valve. When current is removed, a return spring pushes the plunger back to its default position. Microfluidic solenoid valves are available in 2/2-way (two ports, two positions — simple on/off) and 3/2-way (three ports, two positions — switching between two flow paths) configurations. The 3/2-way configuration is particularly useful in analytical instruments for switching between sample and reagent streams, directing flow between analysis channels, or routing waste. The internal volumes and orifice sizes are extremely small to minimize dead volume, prevent sample carryover and cross-contamination, and enable rapid switching response times — all critical for accurate analytical and diagnostic results.
- Microfluidic valves are used in industries and applications that require precise control of very small fluid volumes for analytical, diagnostic, or research purposes. Water quality analysis and environmental monitoring instruments use microfluidic valves to handle reagents and water samples for automated chemical testing. In-vitro diagnostics (IVD) instruments use them to sort, control, and direct blood, urine, and other biological samples and reagents through analysis cartridges and microchannels. DNA sequencing and genomics platforms use microfluidic valves to precisely control the delivery of reagents during sequencing reactions. Clinical chemistry and immunoassay analyzers use them for sample and reagent management. - The fundamental difference is scale and precision. Standard industrial solenoid valves are designed for pipe sizes from 1/8 inch to several inches and flow rates measured in gallons per minute — they control bulk fluid flow in process piping, pneumatic systems, and hydraulic circuits. Microfluidic valves are designed for orifice sizes measured in fractions of a millimeter and flow rates measured in microliters per minute — they control tiny volumes of fluid in analytical instruments, diagnostic devices, and lab-on-chip systems. Microfluidic valves have extremely low internal dead volume to prevent sample carryover and cross-contamination between different fluids being switched through the valve — this is critical in analytical and diagnostic applications where even trace contamination can invalidate test results. They are constructed from chemically inert and biocompatible materials like PEEK rather than the brass, stainless steel, or aluminum bodies typical of standard solenoid valves. They consume very low electrical power, enabling battery-powered and portable instrument designs. And they are designed for manifold mounting, where many valves are grouped together in a compact assembly to create complex fluid routing circuits.
