- A pneumatic rotary actuator is a device that converts compressed air energy into controlled rotational motion to turn, index, or position a shaft, tooling, or workpiece through a defined angle of rotation. The two main design types are rack-and-pinion and vane. Rack-and-pinion rotary actuators use a linear piston connected to a rack gear that meshes with a pinion gear on the output shaft — as compressed air drives the piston linearly, the rack rotates the pinion, producing torque at the output. This is the most common type and provides high torque and precise angle control. Vane rotary actuators use a vane attached to the output shaft inside a sealed chamber — compressed air on one side of the vane pushes it to rotate the shaft. Vane actuators are simpler and more compact but typically provide lower torque. Compact Automation double-acting rotary actuators available through Centro produce torque up to 5,200 inch-pounds at 100 PSI, are constructed of anodized aluminum, and can be configured with various rotations, mounting options, and sensors.
- Pneumatic rotary actuators are used in applications requiring controlled angular motion powered by compressed air. Valve actuation is one of the largest applications — rotary actuators mounted on ball valves, butterfly valves, and plug valves provide automated quarter-turn (90-degree) operation for process control and safety shutdown systems. Part indexing and positioning on assembly machines uses rotary actuators to rotate workpieces to different orientations for multi-step assembly, welding, machining, or inspection. Material handling uses them to rotate, tip, or orient parts on conveyors and transfer systems. Pick-and-place systems use rotary actuators to rotate grippers between pick and place positions. Machine tool applications use them for tool changing, fixture indexing, and part rotation. Packaging equipment uses them for cap tightening, label applicator rotation, and product orientation. The combination of high torque, fast response, simple control (just a directional valve and air supply), and compact size makes pneumatic rotary actuators the default choice for angular motion in pneumatic automation systems.
- A single-acting rotary actuator uses compressed air to rotate the shaft in one direction and a return spring to rotate it back in the other direction when air is removed. This provides a fail-safe return — if the air supply is lost, the spring automatically returns the actuator (and whatever it is connected to) to the starting position. Single-acting rotary actuators are commonly used for valve actuation where a fail-safe position (open or closed) is required for safety. A double-acting rotary actuator uses compressed air to drive rotation in both directions — air is applied to one port to rotate clockwise and to the other port to rotate counterclockwise. This provides full torque in both directions and allows the actuator to be held in either position by maintaining air pressure. Double-acting actuators provide higher torque in both directions since there is no spring consuming part of the air force. The Compact Automation rotary actuators available through Centro are double-acting, providing full torque capability in both rotational directions.
- Sizing a pneumatic rotary actuator requires determining the torque needed to perform the work and then selecting an actuator that provides sufficient torque at the available air supply pressure. Calculate the required torque by identifying all the loads and resistances the actuator must overcome: the torque to rotate the load (determined by the load's mass, moment of inertia, and radius of rotation), friction torque in bearings, seals, and the connected mechanism, breakaway torque (the initial torque needed to start rotation from a stopped position, which is typically higher than running torque), and any dynamic loads from acceleration and deceleration. Add a safety factor of at least 25% to the calculated torque to ensure reliable operation under varying conditions. Compare the required torque with safety factor to the actuator's torque output at your air supply pressure. Select an actuator that meets or exceeds the required torque. Also consider the rotation angle needed (90, 180, 270, or 360 degrees), the mounting style compatible with your installation, and whether sensors for position feedback are needed.
- Pneumatic rotary actuators are available with various mounting and sensing options to integrate into different machine designs. Mounting options include base mounting (bolted to a flat surface), flange mounting (mounted by a flange on the actuator body), foot mounting, and trunnion mounting (pivoting mount for applications where the actuator body needs to swing). The output shaft connection can be keyed, splined, or configured with a coupling to connect to the driven mechanism. Sensors and position feedback options include magnetic reed switches or Hall-effect sensors mounted on the actuator body that detect the piston position through the aluminum housing wall to provide open, closed, or intermediate position signals back to the PLC or control system. These sensors are essential for confirming that the actuator has completed its rotation and reached the commanded position before the machine controller allows the next step in the sequence.
