Blast Media
The blast media you choose decides how fast you clean, what surface profile you leave behind and how much media you go through. A grit that's too aggressive can damage thin parts, and one that's too soft wastes time. Picking the right abrasive for the substrate and finish is the first step to a good blasting job.
Common Blast Media
- Aluminum oxide – hard, sharp and recyclable, ideal for etching and coating prep
- Glass bead – produces a smooth, satin finish without removing base metal
- Steel shot and grit – long-lasting media for heavy descaling in wheel and recovery systems
- Garnet and mineral abrasives – low-dust, cost-effective options for open blasting
- Plastic and organic media – walnut shell and plastic for delicate parts and paint stripping
Selecting Media
Consider the substrate, the contaminant you're removing, the anchor profile your coating requires, and whether your equipment recycles media. Mesh size controls the finish: coarser grits cut faster, finer grits leave a smoother surface. Make sure the media is compatible with your blast pot or cabinet.
Centro supplies blast media alongside the cabinets, pots and safety gear to use it, so you can get your whole blasting setup in one place.
