Open Channel Flow Meters
Open channel flow meters measure water moving through partially filled pipes, flumes, weirs and ditches. Municipal wastewater plants, industrial discharge points, irrigation systems and stormwater monitoring all rely on them, often to meet permit reporting requirements.
Measurement Methods
- Flumes and weirs with level sensors – Parshall, Palmer-Bowlus and V-notch primary devices
- Ultrasonic level-to-flow meters – non-contact measurement above the channel
- Area-velocity meters – measure depth and velocity in pipes without a flume
- Radar flow sensors – non-contact velocity and level
- Totalizers and data loggers – record flow for compliance reports
Choosing a System
Consider the channel shape and size, expected flow range, debris and surcharge conditions, and whether a primary device is already installed. For permit sites, check accuracy requirements and data logging. Non-contact sensors cut maintenance in dirty wastewater.
