Heat Pipes
Heat pipes are the working core of evacuated tube solar water heaters. Each sealed copper pipe holds a small amount of fluid that boils in the sun, carries heat up to the collector manifold, condenses and flows back down, moving heat into your water quickly and efficiently.
Why Heat Pipe Collectors
- High efficiency – strong performance in cold weather and on cloudy days
- Freeze resistance – the water never passes through the glass tubes
- Easy servicing – single tubes can be replaced without draining the system
- Overheat protection – many designs limit heat transfer at high temperatures
Replacement & Sizing
When replacing heat pipes, match the pipe length, condenser bulb diameter and tube size to your existing collector. For new systems, the number of tubes is based on hot water demand, location and roof orientation. Inspect collectors periodically for cloudy or broken tubes, which mean the vacuum has been lost.
Centro supplies heat pipes and solar water heating components for new installations and replacement parts.
