- A general-purpose butterfly valve is a quarter-turn valve that uses a disc-shaped closure element (the butterfly disc) mounted on a central shaft to control or shut off fluid flow in a pipeline. When the disc is rotated 90 degrees from closed to open, flow passes around the disc; when rotated back, the disc seats against a resilient liner to provide a tight seal. These valves are called general-purpose because they are designed for a wide range of standard industrial services including water, air, low-pressure steam, and general chemical applications at moderate pressures and temperatures. They are popular due to their compact, lightweight design, low cost relative to other valve types, quick operation, and ability to handle large flow rates with minimal pressure drop. General-purpose butterfly valves are available in ductile iron, carbon steel, stainless steel, PVC, and CPVC body materials with wafer or lug body styles, and seat materials including EPDM, Buna-N (nitrile), Viton, and silicone depending on the media and temperature. They are widely used in water treatment, HVAC, fire protection, and general industrial piping systems.
- Wafer and lug are the two most common body styles for butterfly valves, and the difference relates to how the valve is installed between pipe flanges and whether it can be used for dead-end (end-of-line) service. A wafer butterfly valve has a slim, disc-shaped body that fits between two pipe flanges and is held in place by the bolting of the flanges themselves — the long through-bolts pass through the flanges on each side and sandwich the valve body in between. Wafer valves are the most compact and economical option and are suitable for in-line isolation where both sides of the pipe will remain connected. A lug butterfly valve has threaded inserts (lugs) in the valve body that allow each flange to be bolted directly to the valve independently. This means one side of the piping can be disconnected while the other remains bolted to the valve, which is important for dead-end service — such as at the end of a pipeline where downstream piping may need to be removed for maintenance while the valve holds back pressure from the upstream side. Lug style valves cost slightly more and are physically thicker, but they provide this critical versatility. If your application ever requires isolating one side of the pipeline and disconnecting the other, a lug style is the right choice.

Buna-N (nitrile) provides good resistance to petroleum-based fluids, oils, and fuels, making it the preferred seat for applications involving hydrocarbons and lubricants. Viton (FKM) offers superior chemical resistance to a broad range of aggressive chemicals, solvents, and acids, and handles higher temperatures (up to about 400°F) — it is specified for chemical processing and applications where EPDM or Buna-N would degrade. Silicone handles the highest temperatures of the elastomeric seats and is used in high-temperature air and some food applications.
