- A general-purpose butterfly valve is a quarter-turn valve that uses a disc-shaped closure element (the butterfly disc) mounted on a central shaft to control or shut off fluid flow in a pipeline. When the disc is rotated 90 degrees from closed to open, flow passes around the disc; when rotated back, the disc seats against a resilient liner to provide a tight seal. These valves are called general-purpose because they are designed for a wide range of standard industrial services including water, air, low-pressure steam, and general chemical applications at moderate pressures and temperatures. They are popular due to their compact, lightweight design, low cost relative to other valve types, quick operation, and ability to handle large flow rates with minimal pressure drop. General-purpose butterfly valves are available in ductile iron, carbon steel, stainless steel, PVC, and CPVC body materials with wafer or lug body styles, and seat materials including EPDM, Buna-N (nitrile), Viton, and silicone depending on the media and temperature. They are widely used in water treatment, HVAC, fire protection, and general industrial piping systems.
- Wafer and lug are the two most common body styles for butterfly valves, and the difference relates to how the valve is installed between pipe flanges and whether it can be used for dead-end (end-of-line) service. A wafer butterfly valve has a slim, disc-shaped body that fits between two pipe flanges and is held in place by the bolting of the flanges themselves — the long through-bolts pass through the flanges on each side and sandwich the valve body in between. Wafer valves are the most compact and economical option and are suitable for in-line isolation where both sides of the pipe will remain connected. A lug butterfly valve has threaded inserts (lugs) in the valve body that allow each flange to be bolted directly to the valve independently. This means one side of the piping can be disconnected while the other remains bolted to the valve, which is important for dead-end service — such as at the end of a pipeline where downstream piping may need to be removed for maintenance while the valve holds back pressure from the upstream side. Lug style valves cost slightly more and are physically thicker, but they provide this critical versatility. If your application ever requires isolating one side of the pipeline and disconnecting the other, a lug style is the right choice.
- The seat (also called the liner) in a general-purpose butterfly valve is the resilient material that the disc seals against when closed, and selecting the right seat material is critical for reliable shutoff, long service life, and chemical compatibility. EPDM is the most common general-purpose seat material — it offers excellent resistance to hot water, steam, dilute acids and alkalis, and most CIP cleaning chemicals, with a temperature range of approximately -40°F to 300°F. It is the standard choice for water treatment, HVAC, and food and beverage applications. Buna-N (nitrile) provides good resistance to petroleum-based fluids, oils, and fuels, making it the preferred seat for applications involving hydrocarbons and lubricants. Viton (FKM) offers superior chemical resistance to a broad range of aggressive chemicals, solvents, and acids, and handles higher temperatures (up to about 400°F) — it is specified for chemical processing and applications where EPDM or Buna-N would degrade. Silicone handles the highest temperatures of the elastomeric seats and is used in high-temperature air and some food applications. Neoprene provides good general resistance to weathering, ozone, and moderate chemicals. Always check the seat material's compatibility with the specific media, temperature, and pressure of your application.
- General-purpose butterfly valves can be equipped with several types of operators to suit different application needs. A lever (handle) operator is the simplest and most common option for smaller valves — it provides manual quarter-turn operation and typically includes a lockable multi-position detent plate that allows the valve to be set and held at intermediate positions for throttling, not just full open or full closed. A gear operator uses a worm gear mechanism to convert multiple handwheel turns into the quarter-turn motion of the valve — gear operators are standard on larger valves (typically 10 inches and above) where the disc torque is too high for a lever, and they provide fine position control for throttling applications. A bare stem (also called actuation-ready) configuration provides the valve without any operator attached — just the exposed stem end with an ISO 5211 mounting flange, ready to receive a pneumatic or electric actuator for automated operation. Pneumatic actuators are the most common automation choice, using compressed air to drive the valve open and closed with fast cycle times and fail-safe spring-return capability. Electric actuators are used where compressed air is not available or where precise position control and feedback are needed.
- General-purpose butterfly valves are one of the most widely used valve types across industry because they offer reliable flow control in a compact, cost-effective package. Water and wastewater treatment plants use them extensively for isolation and flow control throughout the treatment process — from raw water intake through distribution.
