Choosing a Valve
Select by pressure class, temperature, size and trim. Globe valves have higher pressure drop than gate valves, so use them where control is needed.

- A globe valve is a linear-motion valve that uses a disc (plug) moving perpendicular to the flow path to regulate, throttle, or shut off fluid flow. The valve body has a characteristic spherical or rounded shape (hence the name 'globe'), with an internal baffle that forces the fluid to change direction as it flows through the valve. The disc is connected to a stem that is raised and lowered by a handwheel, gear operator, or actuator. As the disc lifts off the seat, flow begins and increases proportionally as the disc opens further. The disc can be held at any intermediate position between fully closed and fully open, providing precise flow regulation. This inherent throttling capability is the globe valve's primary advantage — the design provides a predictable, controllable relationship between disc position and flow rate, making it the standard valve for flow control, pressure regulation, and throttling applications. Globe valves also provide excellent shutoff when closed, because the disc seats firmly against the seat ring with a metal-to-metal or soft-seated seal.
- The fundamental difference is their intended function. Globe valves are designed for throttling and flow regulation — they can be set to any position between open and closed to precisely control the flow rate, and their internal geometry provides a predictable, stable relationship between disc position and flow. Gate valves are designed for on/off isolation only — they are either fully open or fully closed and should not be used at intermediate positions. Globe valves have higher pressure drop than gate valves when fully open because the fluid must change direction inside the valve body (the tortuous flow path creates resistance). Gate valves provide a straight-through, full-bore flow path with minimal pressure drop when open. Globe valves cycle well at partial positions and maintain their seating surfaces even with frequent throttling. Gate valves wear out quickly if held at partial positions due to erosion and vibration. For most piping systems, the choice is straightforward: use globe valves where you need to control or regulate flow, and gate valves where you need full-bore isolation with minimal pressure drop.
- Globe valves are available in three main body designs, each optimized for different piping configurations and flow characteristics. The standard (tee-pattern or Z-body) globe valve has the inlet and outlet in line with each other and the disc moves perpendicular to the flow — this is the most common design, providing the best throttling control, but it creates the highest pressure drop due to two 90-degree flow direction changes inside the valve. The angle-pattern globe valve has the inlet and outlet at 90 degrees to each other — the fluid makes only one 90-degree turn, resulting in lower pressure drop than the tee pattern. Angle globe valves also serve as both a valve and an elbow, eliminating a pipe fitting and reducing weight and potential leak points. The Y-pattern globe valve has the stem and disc oriented at approximately 45 degrees to the body — the fluid makes a minimal change in direction, providing the lowest pressure drop of any globe valve design. Y-pattern globe valves are used in high-pressure services and applications where minimizing pressure drop is important while still maintaining throttling capability.
- Globe valves are used in applications across virtually all industries where precise flow control, throttling, or pressure regulation is required. Power generation plants use globe valves extensively for boiler feedwater control, steam throttling, turbine bypass, desuperheating, and drain and vent service.
