Relief valves and vacuum breakers are vital safety devices that protect systems and equipment from overpressure or vacuum conditions. Relief valves are designed to automatically relieve excessive pressure within a system, preventing potential damage or catastrophic failure. They are commonly used in boilers, pressure vessels, pipelines, and hydraulic systems. On the other hand, vacuum breakers are utilized to prevent the formation of a vacuum or negative pressure within a system, which can lead to implosion or damage. Vacuum breakers are commonly found in plumbing systems, water supply lines, and industrial processes. These valves ensure system integrity and safety by releasing pressure or preventing vacuum, safeguarding equipment, and preventing potential hazards.

Pressure reducing valves lower incoming pressure to a steady, safe downstream level. They protect equipment, reduce leaks and wear, and keep steam, water, air and gas systems running at the right pressure even when demand changes.
Pressure Reducing Valve Types
- Direct-acting valves – simple, compact and economical for small flows
- Pilot-operated valves – precise control at higher flow rates
- Steam PRVs – for heating, process and humidification
- Water PRVs – protect building and process water systems
- Air and gas regulators – for plant air and fuel gas
Sizing a PRV
Size the valve for flow and pressure drop, not simply the pipe size, because an oversized PRV hunts and wears quickly. You'll need inlet and outlet pressure, maximum and minimum flow, and media temperature. Install a strainer ahead of the valve and a relief valve downstream for protection.
Centro can help you size and select pressure reducing valves for steam, water, air and gas.

Globe valves regulate and throttle flow precisely. The disc moves perpendicular to the seat, giving fine control in steam, water, oil and process lines.
Globe Valve Types
- Bronze globe valves – utility and steam service
- Cast and forged steel – high pressure and temperature
- Stainless globe valves – corrosive service
- Angle and Y-pattern – reduced pressure drop
- Control globe valves – automated modulation
Choosing a Valve
Select by pressure class, temperature, size and trim. Globe valves have higher pressure drop than gate valves, so use them where control is needed.
Centro supplies globe valves for flow regulation.

General-purpose butterfly valves are versatile components used in fluid control systems to regulate and control the flow of various liquids and gases. These valves feature a disc-shaped closure element, known as the butterfly disc, which rotates on a central axis to control the flow passage. General-purpose butterfly valves are popular due to their compact design, lightweight construction, and ease of operation. They offer quick and efficient shut-off capabilities and can handle significant flow rates with minimal pressure drop. These valves are widely used in industries such as water treatment, HVAC, chemical processing, and industrial applications where reliable flow control and cost-effective solutions are required. With manual or automated operation options, general-purpose butterfly valves provide a reliable and economical choice for a wide range of fluid control applications.

Gate valves are a type of valve used in industrial settings to control the flow of liquids, gases, and solid materials. They work by opening or closing depending on the pressure applied to them. This allows for increased control over the flow rate compared to other valves. Gate valves are designed with a gate-like mechanism that is opened or closed using handles on one valve's end. These valves allow a high flow rate; when closed, they offer excellent sealing capabilities. Gate valves can be used in various industries, including oil and gas production, water treatment plants, chemical processing facilities, etc. Their ability to quickly switch from open to closed makes them ideal for applications requiring rapid shut-off or start-up operations. We offer a wide selection of gate valves for industrial applications, ensuring the highest quality and reliability when controlling process flow.

Mixing valves are an essential element of process flow control. In industrial settings, they mix two fluids together at a predetermined ratio. This allows for precise control over the output mixture, creating solutions that meet specific requirements for any application. Mixing valves offer flexible temperature control by combining both hot and cold supplies in different proportions. They can also be used with other media, such as gases or solids, to create otherwise impossible combinations. As a result, mixing valves can provide a wide range of benefits, including improved energy efficiency and operational accuracy in various industries. We are proud to distribute these high-quality products and provide technical support for our customers who rely on them as part of their process flow control systems.

- Use a ball valve for simple on/off shutoff, a control valve when you need to regulate flow rate or pressure, and a check valve to prevent backflow. The choice comes down to whether you need to stop flow, control it, or protect against reverse flow.
- Cv is the flow coefficient — how much water a valve passes at a given pressure drop. Full port means the valve opening matches the pipe diameter for unrestricted flow; regular port is slightly smaller. End connections describe how the valve connects to pipe (NPT threads, flanges, etc.). Body material determines compatibility with your media and environment — brass, stainless, and PVC are the most common.
- Start with your required Cv based on flow rate and pressure drop. Then confirm the valve's pressure and temperature ratings exceed your system's maximums. Undersizing causes excessive pressure drop; oversizing reduces control precision. Always size for your actual operating conditions, not system maximums.
- Fail-open means the valve opens if power or signal is lost; fail-closed means it closes — critical for safety applications. NPT is a threaded connection best for smaller pipes and lower pressures. Flanged connections bolt between pipe flanges and are preferred for larger pipes, high pressure, or applications requiring frequent removal.
- Ball valves use a rotating ball for fast quarter-turn shutoff and are ideal for frequent operation. Gate valves use a rising gate for full open/close and are better for infrequent operation where minimal flow restriction matters. Ball valves are generally more reliable, longer lasting, and easier to operate.
- Because no single valve works well in every application. Pressure, temperature, media type, flow control needs, pipe size, and safety requirements all vary dramatically across industries. Each valve type is engineered to solve a specific set of those problems efficiently.
- Ball valves offer tighter shutoff and are better for smaller lines or where zero leakage matters. Butterfly valves are lighter, more compact, and more cost-effective for larger diameter pipes. For high-volume water flow in large lines, butterfly valves are typically the practical choice.
- Look for stainless steel or carbon steel body construction, graphite or metal seat materials, and valves rated for your specific pressure-temperature combination. Globe valves and ball valves with metal seats are commonly used in high-temp applications. Always verify the valve's published P-T rating before specifying.
- Match the valve type to your application (shutoff, control, or check). Verify body material compatibility with your media. Confirm pressure and temperature ratings exceed operating conditions. Consider end connection type, actuation method, and maintenance requirements. When in doubt, over-specify on pressure rating rather than under.
